In 2018 the European Commission launched the foundational Sustainable Finance Action Plan, which had three specific objectives: i) redirect capital flows towards sustainable investments, in order to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth; ii) manage financial risks arising from climate change, environmental degradation and social issues; and iii) encourage transparency and a long-term investment perspective in financial and economic activities.
