The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has been very effective in tackling cross-border VAT frauds and other criminal offences that affect EU financial interests. 'We have currently more than a thousand of cases under investigation, says Daniëlle Goudriaan, European Prosecutor at the EPPO.
The EPPO is the independent prosecution office of the European Union. It became operational on 1 June 2021 to prosecute crimes affecting the budget of the EU; crimes generally related to money laundering, fraud and corruption. In the short time that the EPPO has been active, its investigations uncovered billions of euros in potential losses, proving itself to be a key player in the fight against corruption in EU funds. We spoke to Daniëlle Goudriaan, European Prosecutor at the EPPO based in Luxembourg, about the mandate, current investigations and the future of the EPPO.
